Ellen MacArthur Foundation - Circulytics™
In January 2020 the Ellen MacArthur Foundation launched Circulytics™, a tool that allows organisations to assess how circular they currently are via a broad set of metrics which deliver a company-level score. This score helps businesses understand the extent of their success in adopting circular economy business opportunities; it provides a ‘snapshot’ of the circularity of their material flows and service models, and highlights the most important development areas to concentrate on.
The tool includes altogether seven indicators divided into two main categories: “Enablers” and “Outcomes”. All the indicators are assessed separately based on the data provided by the company*. The scale ranges from A (best) to E. The overall score is the average of the “Enablers” and “Outcomes” scores. As the number of companies using Circulytics™ increases, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation will calculate and provide the industry average for the users for benchmarking their result within their own sector.
Plus Pack offered to use the tool
Plus Pack was one of the companies offered to measure its circularity performance in Circulytics™. Camilla Haustrup Hermansen, Director of Business Development at Plus Pack, says “The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has for many years been a source of inspiration when it comes to circularity and we feel honored that we were encouraged to use their new tool”.
The Plus Pack results were positive. The overall score was A- which is well above industry benchmark both in terms of “Enablers” and “Outcomes”. In the table below Plus Pack’s individual scores are stated.
“We are proud that three of the five “Enablers” scored A+ as we have invested both effort and time into especially two of the “Enablers” – Innovation and People and skills”, says Camilla Haustrup Hermansen. “We have worked hard to become more circular in our business focus and product assortment”.
As an example, Plus Pack has been involved in setting new industry standards by developing a Danish Design Manual together with various national stakeholders in order to improve reuse and recycling of plastic packaging.
We encourage other companies to measure their circularity performance in Circulytics™. It is available free of charge to all interested companies at www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org.
