A caring meal to heal the wounds

On a trip to the United States in 2017, Charlotte Thyberg was inspired by a non-profit organisation who prepares meals for families that are going through a crisis. Thinking that Denmark was in need for something similar, she started planning for introducing her home country to the concept as the first equivalent outside the United States.

To realise this charitable project, Charlotte Thyberg left her job as Product Manager in a Danish company. She founded the non-profit organisation Det Kærlige Måltid (“The Caring Meal”), which has been launched in January in the city of Aarhus. The initiative helps Danes who are going through a difficult time in their lives because of a serious disease or the loss of a family member.

Over a period of 8 weeks, Det Kærlige Måltid delivers 4 main meals a week to families. This can help them focus on recovery. “When a family is hit by a serious illness they often do not have the energy to buy groceries or prepare complete meals”, Charlotte Thyberg explains. She continues: “But nourishing meals are crucial when you are ill, and the mere act of having a meal in the company of others can hold great significance when you are in the midst of a crisis”.

I have not met a single person or company, who did not think the idea is a good one”, Charlotte Thyberg says, referring to the many companies who support Det Kærlige Måltid with generous donations. Plus Pack supports Det Kærlige Måltid with packaging so the meals can be delivered safely to the families.

Supporting people in recovering from unfortunate situations is not the sole objective of the non-profit organisation. The staff consists of young volunteers aged between 15 and 25 years. They are mentored in food preparation and business skills, and are given the opportunity to become team leaders after 100 hours of work in the kitchen.

Charlotte Thyberg’s goal is to deliver 10.000 meals within the first year of the organisation. If it becomes a success, her plan is to expand the idea to other big Danish cities. “I firmly believe in this project”, she concludes.
